Card terminals for barbershops in Canada: how to choose
Countertop, handheld or phone? How to choose a card terminal for a Canadian barbershop, what to check for Interac and tips, and what it really costs.
The right card terminal makes checkout invisible. The wrong one means a line at the desk, a barber hunting for the reader, and tips that end up in the wrong pocket. Here's how to choose one for a Canadian barbershop.
The three options
Countertop smart terminal
A reader with its own touchscreen that lives at the front desk. The client sees the total, picks a tip and taps, inserts or swipes. Good for shops with a reception desk and steady foot traffic.
Portable Bluetooth reader
A small reader that pairs with a phone or tablet and goes wherever you are. Takes chip and PIN, which matters for debit above the tap limit. Good for barbers who check out at the chair.
Tap to pay on a phone
No hardware at all. The barber's iPhone or Android takes contactless payments. Good for booth renters and solo barbers. Read tap to pay for barbers for the details.
What to check before you buy
- Interac debit. Tap and chip and PIN. Non-negotiable in Canada. More in Interac debit for barbershops.
- Tips on screen. The client should pick the tip before paying, with sensible presets and a custom option.
- Tips per barber. The payment needs to land on the right barber's ticket, or you'll be untangling tips on Friday night.
- Connection to your booking software. A terminal that doesn't know who's in the chair means re-typing every price. Pick one that pulls the ticket from the booking.
- French screens and receipts if you're in Quebec.
- Battery and connectivity. Wi-Fi, cellular or Bluetooth, and whether it survives a full Saturday.
What it costs
- Hardware: a one-time cost for the reader. Smart countertop terminals cost more than Bluetooth readers.
- Processing: a fee per transaction, different for credit and debit. Ask for both, and ask whether your software adds anything on top.
- Software: some providers charge a monthly fee for the POS app. Others bundle it with your booking software.
Avoid long contracts and leased terminals. Buying the hardware outright is usually cheaper over a couple of years.
